Tips for Feeding Picky Toddlers: How to Handle Fussy Eating

Fussy eaters may be challenging to feed, and it’s only natural to worry if your child’s eating enough food. Try not to judge each day on its own. It’s more useful to look at what they’ve eaten across the whole week.

It is very common for toddlers to refuse foods, and many parents experience this. The toddler picky eating phase is normal. Here are some ways to help you get picky toddlers to eat.

How to encourage toddlers to eat

Progress tends to come from small, steady changes rather than any one fix, and a little patience goes a long way.

What to feed a picky toddler

  • Gradually introduce different foods
  • Try reintroducing foods they’ve turned down before. Toddlers’ tastes shift quickly, and it can take quite a few attempts before a new food is accepted.
  • Smaller portions are more manageable for them and less daunting; you can always top them up if they finish

Staying calm while feeding picky toddlers

  • If your toddler refuses to eat the food, just stay calm and take it away. Making a big deal of it can turn refusing food into a game they enjoy playing
  • Don’t bribe or force them to eat, as this can lead to unhealthy eating habits
  • Be patient and offer plenty of praise — they might just be a slow eater

Making mealtimes easier

  • Lead by example, serve the same food to the family, try to eat with your child as much as you can
  • Avoid too many snacks during the day (two healthy snacks is okay)
  • If there’s a family member or friend your toddler particularly enjoys being around, invite them to a meal. Toddlers will sometimes eat more readily for someone other than a parent.
  • Give them a calm environment with as few distractions as possible

As long as they are not losing weight and are getting the right nutrients, they will be okay.

When to seek further support

A fussy stage is a normal part of how toddlers learn to eat, and most grow out of it. But if your toddler is losing weight, refuses whole food groups, or you’re worried they aren’t getting enough nutrients, speak to your health visitor, GP or a healthcare professional.
